A peek into a day with Leelu

It is a Saturday, and Leelu writes in her diary. Her small desk sits against one of the windows. She could see the sunflowers in the back of the house.

Dear diary,

I have terrible news! I have a sore throat. My mother called the doctor, and I said, ” No! I am fine. Really!” But my throat hurt again. The doctor came over and told me I need to rest and take medicine, yuck! medicine! I told him I have magical jelly beans. He smiled but said, “No, you take your medicine.” But also, my mom made me strawberry Jell-O squares! And tonight, Mrs. B will be making hot chocolate.  I don’t mind being sick too much.

I was supposed to make an announcement, but now I can’t. Dandelion is being brave and is right next to me. Taking naps. Because that is how he guards.

My friends came over to visit me in my room. They chose someone to do the big announcement.

Ollie quietly said, “I can do it… maybe… if no one looks directly at me.”

Tommy said, “I’ll do it!” but he almost tripped over my broom.

Samantha said she was busy helping her mom clean the shed.

Gillie said she is going to the forest with her mom to collect stones.

Eddy whispered something calming, but it was so low that none of us heard what he said.

And then Ellie stood up.

“I will do it,” she said. “Obviously. I have excellent posture and a clear voice. And I look good on important occasions.”

No one argued. I gave her a thumbs‑up from under her blanket.

Later that day, Ellie put on her prettiest dress, checked herself in the mirror three times, and announced:

“I, Ellie, will now deliver the official Witchville announcement. You may all pay attention.”

Ellie went to Witchville Radio Station.

🎙️ “Good day, Witchville! You’re tuned in to WVRM 7.7  “The Voice of the Mountain.”

A dramatic pause. Of course.

🎙️ “This is Ellie speaking. Yes, THE Ellie.”

She taps the microphone once. For flair.

🎙️ “Leelu cannot speak today due to a very tiny, very squeaky sore throat. Therefore, I,  with excellent posture and perfect pronunciation, have agreed to deliver today’s important news.”

Another pause. She loves pauses.

A soft chime rings.

Ellie brought it herself.
